Abstract
This paper discusses the environmental impacts caused by the school activities at Åbyskolan, an upper secondary school located in the municipality of Klippan in southern Sweden. It also focuses on which measures that can be applied to reduce the environmental impacts and give economical savings. Finally environmental certifications, ISO 14001 and Grön Flagg, have been studied and compared considering which one is the most suitable for implementation at Åbyskolan. This paper discusses the environmental impacts caused by the school activities at Åbyskolan, an upper secondary school located in the municipality of Klippan in southern Sweden. It also focuses on which measures that can be applied to reduce the environmental impacts and give economical savings. Finally environmental certifications, ISO 14001 and Grön Flagg, have been studied and compared considering which one is the most suitable for implementation at Åbyskolan. The main environmental impact is heating of the school buildings and also the usage of electrical appliances. By improving the energy efficiency in buildings and the school activities, Åbyskolan can improve their environmental performance and work towards a sustainable society. Based on the findings in this study, Grön Flagg is considered to be the most suitable certification for Åbyskolan. Grön Flagg engages the students by giving them influence over the environmental issues and makes this an integrated part of their education. ISO 14001 focuses mainly on environmental aspects, which is too comprehensive considering Åbyskolan causes relatively low environmental impacts. Unlike Grön Flagg, ISO 14001 focuses on environmental legislations, which is also too comprehensive in relation to the relatively low environmental impacts caused by Åbyskolan. (Less)
