Abstract
At Haväng in eastern Scania, South Sweden, an underwater landscape occurs on the seabed. The landscape consists of deep-rooted pines standing in organic deposits. Due to sea level changes, the area was exposed during two phases (11,700 to 10,700 and 10,000 to 8,500 years ago) so that pines could live there, to subsequently drown and end up submerged. This study aims to show how the Baltic Sea formation took form. Knowing the historical variations and what has influenced sea level changes in the Baltic Sea, it is possible to draw conclusions about the future of the coastlands. This study shows that there are remains from the old pines even further up in the current Verkeån, 400 meters into the valley, included a pine in gyttjasediment dated... (More)

This study aims to show how the Baltic Sea formation took form. Knowing the historical variations and what has influenced sea level changes in the Baltic Sea, it is possible to draw conclusions about the future of the coastlands. This study shows that there are remains from the old pines even further up in the current Verkeån, 400 meters into the valley, included a pine in gyttjasediment dated to 8,180-8,050 cal BP. This corresponds to the beginning of the Littorina Sea, when the sea just like today was tightly connected to the world ocean. During that period the sea level increased to a maximum of 5-8 meters above present level. Sediment samples adjacent to the pine, show that the sediment has been under water during the entire depositional period. The latest climate report by the IPCC shows that sea levels will increase by up to 1 meter by the year 2100. This is something local municipalitiesare trying to adapt into their planning of the future. The county administrative board of Scania is taking action through recommending municipalities not to allow construction less than 3 meter above sea level. To protect valuable areas municipalities try to dam and sustain the affected coastal areas by filling up with new material where erosion occurs. A more dynamic societal planning should be implemented in areas that could be affected by sea level changes in the future. (Less)
