Abstract
An environmental management system (EMS) is a tool for systematic environmental management. The use of EMS can give several advantages but there are also costs associated with the implementation and the use of EMS, especially if the system is certified. To find out if EMS is a useful tool in the energy sector it is a good idea to study the experience of EMS up to today, e.g. advantages and disadvantages/problems and costs for implementation and use. The aim here is to study how well environmental management with EMS is working in small and medium sized Swedish energy enterprises. The main research questions are: What advantages of EMS did the enterprises expect? What advantages have been the result of EMS? How important is top management... (More)

The main research questions are: What advantages of EMS did the enterprises expect? What advantages have been the result of EMS? How important is top management commitment for good performance of the EMS? Is EMS a good economic investment? Is it important to have the system certified? These questions are answered with the help of information and knowledge from different kinds of sources: existing literature of the area, interviews with six energy enterprises, and an interview with Eddie Åkesson (Statens Forsknings- och Provningsinstitut). The analysis shows that top management commitment is an important (Less)
