- Abstract
- Biocides are chemical and biological pesticides used for preservation and disinfection. It’s being used, both in health care and everyday life, in products such as hand soap, cosmetics and textile fabrics. Studies have shown that, in textiles, a lot of the quantities of the biocides are being washed out during the life cycle of the product. This study aims to map in what extent biocides are being used in consumer products and how they are being advertised and regulated. Since the technology of the sewage plants are not able to purify the water from the biocides, these chemicals will have an impact on our waters. One of the biggest concerns of the usage of biocides is the possible linkage between biocides and resistance in bacteria. The new... (More)

The new regulation from the European commission nr 528/2012 on the use and placing on the market of biocidal products was implemented 1th September 2013, which introduces new guidelines. Although many of the supply managers show knowledge about biocides and claim they avoid biocide-treated the majority of shops still have biocide-treated products. These products were not labeled according to the new regulations, which demands that the products shall be labeled with information about treatment and the desired effect of the treatment. The conclusions of this study are that the knowledge among the supply managers has to be improved, since they are the ones with the power to demand certain terms and conditions from their suppliers. In addition to this, it is necessary for the government to take more responsibility to control the products since the shops don’t have the resources. We cannot anticipate the damage to our waters why biocides should be used with greater restriction due to the precautionary principle. This is necessary if we want to achieve the goal: a sustainable future. (Less)
