Abstract
This study aims to examine different ways to enhance biodiversity in an area, focusing on the park Hemvärnsparken in Kyrkheddinge, Scania, Sweden and its surrounding area. An inventory of species of vascular plants, larger animals as well as butterflies, bees and bumblebees has been carried out within the park and maps have been drawn showing different kinds of habitats and other objects of interest. Based upon this material and appropriate literature on the subject, a number of suggestions have been made as how to increase biodiversity in Hemvärnsparken, which should not conflict with the current uses of the park which include garden sales, soccer practice, recreational activities etc.

The park covers about two hectares and consists of varying kinds of nature, including open areas dominated by grass, dense groves with rich undergrowth, open roadside vegetation and forest edges with an open cover of trees. This provides a variety of habitats for many different kinds of species within the park. A large number of the vascular plants found in the park consist of wild forms of garden plants, while deciduous trees such as horse-chestnut, common ash, maple and sycamore dominate within the park. Suggestions as how to increase biodiversity includes putting up nesting boxes for birds and bats, sowing seeds of meadow flowers in the park combined with mowing in open areas, and providing a constant supply of dead decomposed wood for the benefit of insects and other kinds of organisms. One of the main suggestions is to create a plan for the long-term management of the park, stating planed measures within the park and goals for the future usage of the park. Such a plan would minimize the risk of future measures which might counteract any steps taken towards increased biodiversity within the park. (Less)
