Down and out: Macroeconomic shocks and child health in the Dominican Republic
(2014) EKHM52 20141Department of Economic History
- Abstract
- This paper investigates the association between infant mortality and
macroeconomic shocks in the Dominican Republic, using the 2002 and 2007
Demographic and Health (DHS) surveys. The article starts by reviewing the recent
evolution of macroeconomic and social indicators in the country, as well as infant
mortality trends calculated from the DHS surveys. It then proceeds to estimate logit
and survival models for the determinants of infant mortality, to which de-trended
quarterly GDP and monthly inflation data are subsequently added as explanatory
variables to determine whether macroeconomic shocks are systematically related to
infant mortality. A clear association between negative macro shocks and increased
infant mortality... (More) - This paper investigates the association between infant mortality and

infant mortality is found, and a discussion about the possible transmission mechanisms
is presented. The deterioration of living conditions due to the erosion of household real
incomes, in particular during the 2002-2004 crisis, appears to account for this
association to a large extent. (Less) - Popular Abstract
