Blocking Device and Piston Indicator for a New Generation of Spring Parking Brakes

- Abstract
- The aim of this master thesis has been to develop a Blocking device that makes sure that a Spring parking brake is not unintentionally activated after a manual release. There is also a need for developing a new Piston indicator that should give two signals depending on if the Spring parking brake is active or inactive. Both are supposed to fit with a completely new generation of Spring parking brakes (G4).
A product development method taught at the Division of Machine Design has been utilized in this project. The Blocking device and Piston indicator begin with a target specification and ends up with a final specification, based on the result from the testing and evaluation of prototypes.

A product development method taught at the Division of Machine Design has been utilized in this project. The Blocking device and Piston indicator begin with a target specification and ends up with a final specification, based on the result from the testing and evaluation of prototypes.
This thesis has resulted in two prototypes that have been tested together with the new Spring parking brake with a very satisfying result. The new Blocking device and Piston indicator fulfill large parts of the target specifications. Some requirements have not been tested while further development will be required to fulfill others. The pneumatic reset at low temperatures needs to be revised for the Blocking device while the Piston indicator needs a small adjustment so that contact with the Spring parking brake's Pressure springs is impossible.
Overall, the new Blocking device and Piston indicator worked surprisingly well. Both seem very robust and their conceptual designs are well documented in the report to make further development easier. Faiveley Transport will make a more detailed evaluation of the Blocking device and Piston indicator in the future and compare them with solutions from sister companies. Thereafter a decision will be taken whether to implement or not. (Less)
