- Abstract
- Previous research has shown that people that are begging are negative viewed in the society. The aim of this study was to investigate and analyse how social workers, whom shall work according to the ethical framework, construct the people that are begging. The respondents in the study have been social workers in the public sector and social workers that are conducting voluntary work in Sweden. Five people were interviewed and the theoretical approach was based on the social constructionism perspective, the theory of categorization, norms and normalization. The result of the study showed that the social workers in this... (More)

The aim of this study was to investigate and analyse how social workers, whom shall work according to the ethical framework, construct the people that are begging. The study has used a qualitative method where a semi-structured interview format has been used to collect the material. The respondents in the study have been social workers in the public sector and social workers that are conducting voluntary work in Sweden. Five people were interviewed and the theoretical approach was based on the social constructionism perspective, the theory of categorization, norms and normalization. The result of the study showed that the social workers in this study generally constructed the same picture of people that are begging. The beggars were presented by the social workers as coming from Romania and Bulgaria, belonging to the ethnic group of Roma and are tending to be categorized as beggars on the basis of where they are coming from. The beggars were also described as poor people, without education and work experience. The social workers of this study constructed the beggars as exposed and excluded from the society, both in the home country and in Sweden, because they are Roma. The conclusion is that the picture that is constructed by the social workers corresponds to the previous research about the negative picture constructed by the society. The social workers have basically an empathetic and sympathetic view of beggars. However, the social workers tend to construct the beggars as “the others”, and as a different and abnormal category that deviates from the Swedish norm about how to behave. (Less)
