- Abstract
- The goal of this essay has been to analyze how hospital counselors establish a professional relationship with dying patients and treat them with compassion and professionalism. We wanted to find out how a counselor creates a supportive conversation and how a balance through closeness and distance is established. A qualitative study was done were we interviewed eight hospital counselors tied to palliative care units in Sweden. Our results were analyzed in the perspective of professional ethics and coping. The counselors are guiding their patients through different stages of existential crises.
