Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
Abstract
The aim of this phenomenological study was to broaden the understanding about what people who have been subjected to rape experience as helpful for survival of the rape. Two women who have been subjected to genocidal rape and one woman who has been subjected to childhood rape were interviewed with an open interview approach. The transcribed interviews were analyzed using Giorgi’s phenomenological-psychological perspective. Eleven common themes about what was experienced as helpful for survival emerged in the analysis. These were spirituality, significant others, a positive self-image, the way they look at the rape, not being the only one who has been subjected to this, a positive view on life, “fighting spirit”, acceptance, being good at... The transcribed interviews were analyzed using Giorgi’s phenomenological-psychological perspective. Eleven common themes about what was experienced as helpful for survival emerged in the analysis. These were spirituality, significant others, a positive self-image, the way they look at the rape, not being the only one who has been subjected to this, a positive view on life, “fighting spirit”, acceptance, being good at something, mastering a situation with the rapist and believing in the goodness of humanity. Some of these themes have sub-themes. Six themes particular to individuals were also identified. These consist of working with the self, regaining one’s sexuality, focus on the present, activities, medicine and self-destructive behavior. The emerged themes were discussed in relations to previous research. The participant’s stories can contribute to an increased understanding among professionals working with helping raped women. Other survivors of rape can also benefit from reading about what the participants have experienced as helpful for survival of rape. (Less)
