Begrepp som jämställdhet och feminism används frekvent i dagens politiska och mediala de-batter. Det är slående hur betydelsen av dessa begrepp skiljer sig beroende på vem som tillfrågas. I jämställdhetsarbetet tenderer Sverige att se sig själv som en förebild, men kämpar likastå med en ojämn könsrepresenation i den privata sektorn.
Med utgångspunkt i att begreppet jämställdhet är ett mångtydigt sådant, har denna uppsats strävat efter att undersöka hur användandet av jämställdhetsbegreppet används i politisk och medial debatt. Denna debatt har mer specifikt varit den om införandet av köns-kvotering till bolagstyrelser. Ett resultat som sedan satts i relation till synen på jämställdhet inom liberal- och radikalfeministiska teorier.

Genom att tillämpa Quentin Skinners begreppshistoriska metod och en social-konstruktivistisk genusteori har jämställdhetsbegreppet dekonstruerats utifrån dess politiska, sociala och historiska kontext. Resultatet visar på att jämställdhetsbegreppet i debatten om statligt ansvar i jämställdhetsarbetet i den privata sektorn används i huvudsak utifrån två kate-gorier, formell och reell. En användning som också kan urskiljas inom de feminsitiska teor-ierna, där en rådande konflikt mellan sociala värderingar och relationen till privat och offentligt sektor är central. (Less)

Concepts such as gender equality and feminism are terms frequently used in political and media debates. It’s striking how the meanings of those terms differ radically de-pending on whom you ask. While Sweden tends to consider itself as a self-reputable role model for prioritizing gender equality, it still struggles with an unequal gender rep-resentation in the private sector.
Believing that the term gender equality is an ambiguous concept, this essay has aimed to investigate the use of the term in Swedish political and media debates. While Sweden tends to consider itself as a self-reputable role model for prioritizing gender equality, it still struggles with an unequal gender rep-resentation in the private sector.
Believing that the term gender equality is an ambiguous concept, this essay has aimed to investigate the use of the term in Swedish political and media debates. The focus of the thesis has narrowed down the investigation to the context of the debate on gender quotas to boards in trade and industry. A result furthermore put in relation to the view on gender equality in liberal- and radicalistic feminism theories.
With the use of Quentin Skinner’s analytical conceptual method and a social con-structivist gender theory, the concept of gender equality has been deconstructed from a political, social and historical context. The outcome reached the conclusion that the use of gender equality in debating state responsibility about ensuring equality in the society has two uses, formal and real. A use which could also be distinguished in the political feminism theories, where a conflict between social values and the relation to the private and public sector is central. (Less)
