- Abstract
- Presence outside of time- a phenomenological investigation of the interactive artwork Future Self by rAndom International.
The aim of this essay to investigate the experience of the meeting between the spectator (myself) and Future Self, an interactive artwork by artists’ group rAndom International, shown at their exhibition Studies in Motion at Lunds konsthall in 2014. Future Self is made of a hangning collection of brass rods with LED-lights, connected to two 3D-tracking cameras and computers. The cameras and computers perceive the presence of the spectator, ordering the LED-lights to synchronize a moving picture according to the person’s movements. The cameras and computers perceive the presence of the spectator, ordering the LED-lights to synchronize a moving picture according to the person’s movements. This creates a living reflection made of light, thus allowing the spectator to turn into participant.
The main method of inquiry of this essay is phenomenology, and it is done so through exercising kategories such as parts/ wholes, presence/ absence and phenomenological identity, developed and simplified by Robert Sokolowski in Introduction to Phenomenology (2000). These are applied on Future Self and make upp the largest part of the study. However references are made to several disciplines and themes other than phenomenology, such as the question of temporality as developed by Henri Bergson, and thoughts of technology by post-phenomenologist Don Ihde. In the experience with Future Self, the feeling of togetherness and fusion with the work becomes an immersion comparable to, although not the same as that of virtual realities. The direct presence of the experience change conceptions of time and space. The identity of Future Self and state of immersion, is heightenend through the presence of other spectators, at the same time projecting its identity unto whoever stands in front of its cameras. The object of this essay is not only to accentuate an experience of technology in art, but also to offer some validation to the subjective, thoroughly personal experience and give it credible weight.
