Abstract
I started with the intentions to design a toy. Many of the values I wanted to emphasize are part of or could be applied to the soap-box cart. A traditional soap-box cart is built by hand from bought or collected (left-over) parts and materials. The creation plays a major part in the soapbox concept and I wanted to preserve this. My challenge was to revive the old soap-box cart and adapt it to the 21th century.

The goal of this master thesis was to develop a scale 1:1 model, a 3D computer model and detail renderings visualizing a soap-box cart that will:

• apply a sustainable approach in terms of materials, quality,
reusability, production-techniques and logistics
• adapt to the needs of today’s society: urban areas, living spaces

The goal of this master thesis was to develop a scale 1:1 model, a 3D computer model and detail renderings visualizing a soap-box cart that will:

• apply a sustainable approach in terms of materials, quality,
reusability, production-techniques and logistics
• adapt to the needs of today’s society: urban areas, living spaces
and storage facilities, know-how & access to tools
• encourage outdoor activities and movement
• introduce creative elements, encourage development and
customization
• involve both parents and children in the design process to enhance
the experience and make them feel participant in the process
• encourage social and creative play between children as well as
children and parents
• prolong the lifetime of the product by developing emotional bonds
to it.

The soap-box cart was named joyride and will be made in 10 mm marine
plywood. The design is carefully based on the different needs of the driver and the pusher as well as the users’ age range. It has an adjustable seat with a safety belt, an adjustable rope steering and a breaking system. Joyride consists of 34 different parts with a total weight of 21kg. It can be assembled/ disassembled using locking pins without any tools in less than 10 minutes and
stowed away in a flat package. Every element comes with printed outlines to encourage the owner to personalize the cart much like a three dimensional coloring book.

Joyride received an international Forum design (iF) concept award in 2009. (Less)
