- The image of Malmö is to me, and others that hasn’t grown up in the city, a fairly grey story. Blocks after blocks of brick buildings housing the former workers of the great industries that once were the pillars of the city. The face of the city has changed quite radically in recent years and my personal image of the city has been diversified with new places, buildings and environments, which constantly pops up in different places, but almost always as individual phenomena.
My objective has been to understand how it can be possible to increase the diversity between where different groups act in the city, where they live, do there daily activities and meet. The face of the city has changed quite radically in recent years and my personal image of the city has been diversified with new places, buildings and environments, which constantly pops up in different places, but almost always as individual phenomena.
My objective has been to understand how it can be possible to increase the diversity between where different groups act in the city, where they live, do there daily activities and meet. My question as point of departure for this work has been; How can one in our profession contribute to balance the population in a socio-economical way in the segregated Malmö and to disperse the diversity over the city?
How can it be possible to increase the diversity of people, actions and possibilities within an urban district? How can it be possible to step away from the division of functions, which the modernistic planning ideal left us? How can it be possible to turn the trend of people living more and more with people who are like them to another direction? How can it be possible to disperse the resources, which today are concentrated and separated from each other?
How can one as an architect give the citizens possibilities to make a more socially mixed city themselves? Not top down, but bottom up?
The study of the phenomena segregation, how people live, where, what causes this situation and the effects of it has been my theoretical understanding and background study to this project.
I’ve tried a strategy that empowers inhabitants of the city to change, their situation and the cities locked position in the segregation process. A possibility to redistribute resources within the city, to open new possibilities even to citizens without economical resources to live in areas that haven’t been neglected by people with stronger economical position.
By enforcing an existing urban link groups of inhabitants who normally never meet get connected. The urban spaces along this link become the spine for a social densification process. The process begins with the possibilities to use the street space to meet between different groups. It continues by the establishment of small enterprises that can grow and will be enforced by housing. By time the housing stock gets balanced along the line and the area around it becomes a new social spine in the city, which acts as a model with its expression of diversity for a socially mixed city. - Upplevelsen av Malmö är för mig, och för många andra som inte vuxit upp i staden, en ganska grå stad. Kvarter efter kvarter med tegelhus som före detta arbetarbostäder för de stora industrierna. Stadens bild har ändrats mycket under senare tid och efter att ha bott i staden i några år har jag också fått en mer nyanserad bild av hur många olika ansikten staden har - nya platser, hus och miljöer dyker upp hela tiden, men nästan alltid som enskilda företeelser.

Hur kan man inom en stadsdel öka mångfalden av människor, händelser och möjligheter? Hur kan man upphäva funktionssepareringen, som det modernistiska stadsplaneringsidealet lämnat oss? Hur kan man avstanna utvecklingen där människor lever mer och mer med folk som liknar dem själva? Hur kan man sprida de resurser som idag är koncentrerade och avskilda från varandra? Hur kan man som arkitekt ge människor möjligheten att själva skapa en mer socialt blandad stad? Inte uppifrån men underifrån.
Studiet av fenomenet segregation, hur människor bor och var, och vad som orsakar denna situation och effekten av den har varit min teoretiska förståelse och bakgrundsstudie till projektet.
Jag har velat pröva en strategi som gör att människor får möjligheten att själva ändra sin situation och stadens fastlåsta läge i segregationsprocessen. En möjlighet till omfördelning av resurser inom staden samt öppnandet av nya möjligheter för att även kapitalsvaga grupper kan bosätta sig på platser som inte valts bort av de kapitalstarka. Genom att påvisa möjligheten av hur en balans mellan humankapital och ekonomiskt kapital kan skapas och utvecklas har jag haft förhoppningen att visa på hur fröet till en urban integrationsprocess i en modern stadsbild kan se ut.
Genom att förstärka ett existerande urbant stråk sammankopplar jag befolkningsgrupper som normalt aldrig möts. Stadsrummen längs detta stråk blir utgångspunkter för en social förtätningsprocess. Processen påbörjas av möjligheten att använda stadsrummet för att mötas mellan olika grupper, den åtföljs av etableringen av små verksamheter som växer och förstärks av bostäder. Succesivt balanseras bostadsbeståndet längs stråket och blir en ny social ryggrad i staden som bildar exempel med sitt uttryck av mångfald för en socialt blandat stad.
