The free mobility within the EU has contributed to an increase of EU-migrants. They travel to Sweden, among other countries, mainly from the poorer countries in the Eastern Europe with the aim to find a source of income. The majority of the EU-migrants who arrives to Sweden faces difficulties in finding work and therefore tries to make a living by begging.

The purpose of this study is to examine Swedish mass media’s reporting of begging as a phenomenon and beggars as a social category and what social consequences follows from the mass media representations. Through a critical discourse analysis, an empirical sample consisting of eighteen (18) articles, published during the years 2011 and 2014 are examined. The articles are published in Sweden's largest newspapers; Aftonbladet, Expressen, Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet och Göteborgsposten.

Our study shows that despite the large increase of articles between our selected years, the discourse has not changed significantly. The image of the beggar as a vulnerable, exposed, humiliated, Romanian roma is consistent through the empirical material. One example of the continuity in media discourse is that the beggars are not treated as subject in the articles, in the sense they are not given a voice in the discourse of their own situation. Even though we found that the journalists tried to create a more empathic approach towards the beggars, we also found that they continuously reproduced an idea of ingroups and outgroups - us and them.
