- Abstract
- The aim of this assigment was to study journals and annual reports from a mentalhospital for mentally retarded to exam how the patients are discribed in the text, I´ve been using documents from Vipeholms hospital. To see what noun they´ve used and if possible to see if there is an existing discourse about the patients. The amount of material that I´ve been used has consisted of 60 journals and 17 annual reports. The method that I´ve been used has been a critical discourse analysis. My study is mostly focused on year 1935 to 1945 when there was a different kind of view on the mentally retareded. Because lack of stimulation the mentalpatient had a violent behaviour. The documents also tells about the treatment that was used at the hospital during this time. For exempel they often used speciall gloves and sometimes straightjacket. The legitimization of the forced treatmant was to protect the patient and the surrounding. Even homosexual people was put in mentalhospital because at this time homosexality was seen as a insanity that needed treatment. At a later point a law appears that allow kastration on homosexual as a cure and that was a possible way out of the mentalhospital. (Less)
