- We have done a study on construction of gender in substance abuse treatment by interviewing staff at treatment centers. The aim of the study is to examine notions of gender at two gender separated treatment centers for men and women in substance abuse care, to get a better understanding of how treatments work and other activities are designed and influenced by these approaches. The respondents represent five people from two treatment centers. Our range is strategically selected to be able to answer our purpose and the questions we had. - We have done a study on construction of gender in substance abuse treatment by interviewing staff at treatment centers. The aim of the study is to examine notions of gender at two gender separated treatment centers for men and women in substance abuse care, to get a better understanding of how treatments work and other activities are designed and influenced by these approaches. The respondents represent five people from two treatment centers. Our range is strategically selected to be able to answer our purpose and the questions we had. To be able to answer these questions, we have used a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews. When we have analyzed our data we, as a general principle that pervades the survey as a whole, have used a social constructive perspective. To help us analyze our data we also used gender theory in the form of gender system, construction of gender and hegemonic masculinity. When we analyzed the empirical data gained by our interviews with the respondents, we could draw some conclusions. The staff often compares the two sexes and sees them as their opposites. This results to treatment centers working differently with addiction problems depending on the gender of the client. Also activities, both offered and mandatory, depends on gender. (Less)
