Abstract
The aim of this randomized controlled study was to assess the effect of poweryoga on different aspects of psychological health. Poweryoga is a fitness based yoga that has become a frequent occurrence at gyms. Previous studies have shown that different physical types of yoga have a positive effect on both somatic and psychological health while the effect of specifically poweryoga has only been examined sparsly. The purpose of this study was therefore to assess the effect of poweryoga on stress, anxiety and life satisfaction and furthermore to examine whether mindfulness and experiential avoidance fully or partly could explain the effect of poweryoga on stress, anxiety and life satisfaction. Participants in the study were university... (More)

Participants in the study were university employees with moderate stress. They were randomly assigned to one of two groups, one experimental group and one control group. The number of completers of the study was 70 in total. The participants in the experimental group practiced poweryoga twice a week during four weeks. After the intervention the experimental group experienced significantly less stress and anxiety and higher life satisfaction than the control group. Mindfulness and experiential avoidance did not change as a result of the intervention which also implied that mediation could not be examined. To conclude, poweryoga has positive effects on different aspects of psychological health and poweryoga could therefore be considered a useful intervention for people with work-related stress. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
Experimentgruppen fick utöva poweryoga två gånger i veckan i totalt fyra veckor.
