Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore individuals’ expectations of starting practicing yoga as a stress reducing intervention. In relation to this, two sub aims followed: to explore individuals stress experiences and how they see yoga as a phenomena. Finally, we wished to reflect upon yoga as psychological treatment, and how expectations can influence the experience of yoga. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven participants, who were about to start their yoga. The aim of this study was to explore individuals’ expectations of starting practicing yoga as a stress reducing intervention. In relation to this, two sub aims followed: to explore individuals stress experiences and how they see yoga as a phenomena. Finally, we wished to reflect upon yoga as psychological treatment, and how expectations can influence the experience of yoga. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven participants, who were about to start their yoga. The study was based on a hermeneutic phenomenological approach, and the material was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Five main themes emerged: Experiences of stress, Yoga as a phenomena, Yoga as psychological treatment, A safe room and Searching for the good life. The participants had strong faith in yoga and its potential to enhance health, well-being and the ability to independently cope with problems. They saw yoga as a helpful intervention to reduce different kinds of ill-being, both physical and psychological. For some of them, yoga was seen as an alternative to psychological treatments. The participants pictured the yoga room as a safe place where you are accepted and able to rest. The importance of being accepted in the yoga context could be explained by the constant evaluation from others, which by the participants was being described as part of their stress experience. Syftet med studien var att undersöka individers förväntningar inför att börja utöva yoga i stressreducerande syfte. Syftet med studien var att undersöka individers förväntningar inför att börja utöva yoga i stressreducerande syfte. Relaterat till detta fanns två undersyften: att undersöka individers egna upplevelser av stress, samt deras föreställningar kring yoga som fenomen. Slutligen ville vi även förstå yoga som psykologisk behandlingsmetod, samt att reflektera kring förväntningars eventuella effekt på yogaupplevelsen. Semi-strukturerade intervjuer gjordes med sju deltagare, vilka samtliga stod inför att börja utöva yoga med mål att minska sin stress. Studiens vetenskapsteoretiska ansats är hermeneutisk fenomenologisk. Intervjumaterialet analyserades genom en modifierad version av metoden Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Detta ledde fram till fem huvudteman: Upplevelser av stress, Synen på yoga som fenomen, Yoga som psykologisk behandling, Ett tryggt rum och Sökande efter det goda livet. Resultatet visade att informanterna överlag hade en stor tilltro till yoga och dess potential att öka hälsa, välbefinnande och förmågan att på egen hand bemästra problem. De tänkte sig att yoga kan vara verksamt mot olika typer av ohälsa, fysisk såväl som psykisk. Yoga sågs av flera deltagare som ett alternativ till psykologisk behandling. Deltagarna såg framför sig yogarummet som en trygg plats där man blir accepterad och kan vila. Att bli accepterad i yogasammanhanget framstod som extra viktigt då deltagarnas beskrivningar av sin egen stress innefattade upplevelser av att ständigt vara bedömd och utvärderad. (Less)
