Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)

The study's purpose has been to, based on abused women's experiences, examine their experience of the encounter with the police in Serbia and their needs, during and after the the violent incident. The questions for this study were following: What experiences does the abused women have regarding police treatment in Serbia and how does the encounter with the police affect her further investigation? In order to answer the questions, interviews were carried through with five women as well as with two social workers in Belgrade and Nova Varos, Serbia. The results were presented and analyzed using Jürgen Habermas communicative action theory as well as his central concepts, systems and lifeworld. The result showed that the abused women were dissatisfied with the treatment from the police and this could be due to the lack of communicative action, where the women did not feel believed, respected or listened to. Police used strategic action instead, where personal gain was important, and applied for example via bribery. This could affect the womans further investigation in such a way that she loses trust in the police and chose not to talk or contact them the next time she is exposed to violence. The conclusion showed among other things that the law on domestic violence should be streamlined and that it would be useful for the police in Serbia to become trained in precisely the treatment of victims, as it affects the further investigations.
