- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to answer the question of what people with anorexia nervosa describe have helped them out of their illness. After reading five biographies about five girls struggling with the disease, I made a text analysis which concluded in four factors that the girls describe have helped them recover from anorexia nervosa. The four factors are awareness of the seriousness of the disease, the desire for and decision to make a change, treatment and the support from the network. At the beginning of this essay I ask the questions of what and who people describe have helped them to recover from anorexia nervosa. The answer to these questions are the same as the four factors above. The girls describe that it has helped them to... (More)
- The purpose of this study was to answer the question of what people with anorexia nervosa describe have helped them out of their illness. The girls describe that it has helped them to realize the severity of their disease. It has helped them to make the decision to fight for a change, it has helped them to yearn for a change. The girls describe that various treatments have helped them to recover from the disease. The girls also describe how different processors, friends and family in different ways have helped them to recover. Along with the two questions of what and who the girls describe have helped them, I ask how the answers to what and who have helped the girls can be understood using Antonovsky’s SOC theory, sense of coherence. In the analysis section, I explain how the four factors the girls describe have helped them to recover can lead to comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness, which according to the SOC theory is the foundation for maintaining good health.
