Abstract
The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to find out which measures for reading promotion are used by school libraries and how these can have an effect in terms of increased reading. This is of interest since surveys have shown that Swedish pupils read less and that their reading abilities have decreased. In order to become good at reading one needs to read a lot and this is why promoting reading is important as it will hopefully lead to increased reading. My overall question is: Which factors ensure that reading promotion leads to the desired effect?
My subordinated questions are:

* Which direct and indirect measures to promote reading are used by the school libraries I investigated?

* How does the school librarian receive... (More)

* How does the school librarian receive information on whether the reading promotion has any effect on the pupils?

* How does the work at the school libraries match with the framework and current research?

In the thesis I have used Aidan Chamber’s theory and model of “The Reading Circle” and his theories of how one creates a good reading environment.
I have used qualitative methods. I have conducted observations at five school libraries and interviewed four school librarians.
Through my observations and interviews I have reached the conclusion that certain factors are particularly important when it comes to encouraging pupils to read. These factors are cooperation, time, book collection and availability. I have also noted that the librarians I interviewed work with reading promotion in different ways but all are convinced that it is possible to inspire an interest in reading among the pupils, at least if the condition (Less)
