The method we have used to analyze this is a qualitative text analysis of open blogs written by women suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder and/or Bipolar disorder. We are working with the theoretical concepts of stigma, self stigma, public stigma, normality and Goffmans roles. The results show that women experience stigma and feel discriminated by society due to their mental illness. The women also express a negative self-image with a lot of self-hatred. Their attitude towards their diagnosis is mixed. They express a sense of relief to have received an explanation of their situation and behavior, while they are also negative towards the diagnosis due to feeling labeled and categorized. Their descriptions of their well-being largely correlates with the symptoms of their diagnosis. Depression, angst, self-harm and suicidal tendencies are commonly expressed in the texts. (Less)
