Mechanical Block Wear Indicator

- Abstract
- The purpose of this master thesis has been to develop and design a mechanical block
wear indicator that visually indicates when it is time to change blocks on a train braking
system. Faiveley Transport Nordic is the tread brake competence center in the Faiveley
Group.
An adopted approach of the product development methodology developed by the
professors Karl T. Ulrich and Steven D. Eppinger has been used during the course of
the project.
The developed indication system consists of a mechanism mounted under the block
holder, connected to an indicator at the side of the train. Clear indication is given when
the blocks are worn down, and the system is thereafter easy to reset.

The system has been tested in a lab but not in its intended environment. Therefore, a
recommendation to the company is to test the product on a train, and conduct long term
testing. This has not been possible due to time limit of the project. (Less) - Popular Abstract
- In this master thesis, a system has been developed which alerts service personnel when the
block brakes of a train is worn to its maximum wear depth. The system consists of a device
which establishes mechanical contact with the train wheel and an indicator mounted on the
side of the train. These are connected through a wire.
