Abstract
The foundation method combined pile-raft foundation using end-bearing piles is applied for residential and office complexes. The foundation method means that end bearing piles fitted with a special membrane together with a footing form the basis for the so-called alternative superstructure. By taking advantage of the contact pressure that occurs between a footing and the underlying soil that a building rests on, the number of piles required can be reduced, which in turn leads to a reduction in the costs of the building foundation.

The information presented in this master’s dissertation was compiled in conjunction with the construction company Skanska, which at the time of the commencement of this master dissertation were to build two residential buildings in the same area and were interested in how this foundation method excelled in comparison to more traditional foundation methods. A comparison with piling on end bearing piles and the slab was made with both a technical and an economic evaluation conducted.

PLAXIS is the two-dimensional Finite Element software that was used to create a number of models for the current foundation conditions. Ground and concrete parameters were evalu¬ated for use as input to the software and a model of the construction phase created. Ini¬tially an idealized cross-section was made where the reliability of the software was checked by comparison made in diverse Finite Element software FEM-Design 3D Structure and MATLAB/ CALFEM. The result was then compared with hand calculations where values of subsidence, contact pressure, pressure force to the pile and torque in the base plate were evaluated. Then the reinforcement was to be dimensioned using the software FEM-Design Con¬crete Section where all studies were made for the same section in one of the planned con¬struction projects.

The cost of the traditional slab and the cost of combined pile-raft foundation using end-bear¬ing piles were basically at the same rate while the cost of a foundation made with tradi¬tional piling was calculated to be higher. In any analysis of a founda¬tion method it is im¬portant to make both economic and technical considerations and look at the overall econ¬omy. Cost and method of e.g. operation of insulating the foun¬dation, groundworks, in¬cluding leveling, preparation for crane place on the base plate, and repairs of the facade after cracking due to settlements, are aspects when the foundation method is decided. Popular Abstract (Swedish)
