(More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- In the past the need to enhance land use for agricultural purposes resulted in ditching of land and existing beach deposits to reduce wetlands. The ditching resulted in a 90% decrease of wetlands on Öland together with a decrease in groundwater. Before the drainage had started the beach deposits on Öland worked as a barrier that pre-vented the water to run off towards the Baltic Sea. The topography is dipping on Öland, which leads to water being transported from west to east. By creating ditches and removing parts of the natural obstacles (the beach deposits), the diversion of surface- and groundwater will increase. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to investigate how the damming of some of the ditches would increase the groundwater... (More)

The topography is dipping on Öland, which leads to water being transported from west to east. By creating ditches and removing parts of the natural obstacles (the beach deposits), the diversion of surface- and groundwater will increase. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to investigate how the damming of some of the ditches would increase the groundwater recharge and create a greater abstraction potential in the aquifers in Öland. The result of the calculations of the damming of five ditches resulted in an increased groundwater level in the aquifer in the investigated area.
A restoration of wetlands would automatically result in an improved drinking water supply. The amount of wetland area and an enhanced groundwater recharge is of great importance, especially given the expected and approaching climate changes. Some of the future predictions expect the rainfall to change on Öland. This makes it even more important to restore wetlands since they can store large amounts of water to contribute and secure Öland's water supply. (Less)
