Abstract
The aim for this Master Thesis was to design a new product used in weight training for the Swedish barbell company Eleiko. From the beginning nothing was specified about what sort of equipment that was going to be designed. The thesis has gone through the whole process from figuring out what type of product will be most beneficial for the company to having drawings ready for building a prototype. However the building of the prototype is not within the frame of the thesis mostly because it takes a long time and is done by other workshops.

The aim for this Master Thesis was to design a new product used in weight training for the Swedish barbell company Eleiko. From the beginning nothing was specified about what sort of equipment that was going to be designed. The thesis has gone through the whole process from figuring out what type of product will be most beneficial for the company to having drawings ready for building a prototype. However the building of the prototype is not within the frame of the thesis mostly because it takes a long time and is done by other workshops.
The first part aimed to get knowledge about what types of equipment are wanted and will bring the company in a beneficial direction and to sort out the most advantageous product to further develop. This has been done by generating some different ideas through internal and external searching and later selecting which one of the suggestions to go through with. When that product have been identified the next step is to figure out how this product should be made in general to match all the customer needs. This has mainly been done by benchmarking competitive products, interviewing users and testing models of different designs in finite element software. When the concept design has been chosen the details of the product with material, dimensions and production has been set in detail. By contacting suppliers of material, workshops for production and studying the strength in finite element software the final specifications could be set and drawings together with a production plan could be made. Throughout the whole process of setting detailed specifications the aim has been to get a product that fulfill the needs of the customers and get a strong design while still keeping it manufacturing friendly.
The thesis has provided the student and will hopefully provide the reader with knowledge in the integration process between design and manufacturing. How to design a product and selecting a proper material for the product so that it suits the user not only in terms of usability but also in being able to produce it at a decent cost by adapting specifications to fit for efficient manufacturing. Popular Abstract
Eleiko Group AB has for a long time been working with the development of high quality barbells and equipment for weightlifting, powerlifting and other weight training. The company together with the student have identified an opportunity and a need for the company to increase the amount of products they can offer in order to be able to satisfy their customers.
For this project the goal has been to develop a new product for the company. What sort of product the student was going to develop and the design of it was to be figured out by the student in the project.
