Jakten på kontinuitet - Analytisk kultur hos Militära underrättelse- och säkerhetstjänsten (MUST)
(2015) UNDK01 20151Department of Political Science
- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to identify potentially problematic aspects of the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MUST) social structure, as well as highlighting the relationship between organizational culture and change management. The study has a qualitative approach and is based on the perspective of the intelligence analyst, with focus on relevance to the analytical process. The theoretical framework consists of Schein's theory of organizational culture and Kotter's model of strategic change. The empirical material consists of secondary data and is based on a case study of knowledge production within MUST. The study shows that a hybrid structure of formal and in-formal rules govern the analytic culture of MUST. The... (More)

The study shows that a hybrid structure of formal and in-formal rules govern the analytic culture of MUST. The intelligence analyst lacks awareness of the impact of social structure on the analytical work. A prioritized search for continuity permeates the organization, while a search for consensus governs internal relationships. Management has a position as gatekeeper, a position largely unjustified by the analytical process. The relationship between the intelligence analysts and the customer seems much neglected and an improvement of this relationship would likely generate positive effects for the analytical process. The culture is strong and resistant to change, which makes it unlikely that operational change could be implemented. (Less)
- Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
