Abstract
The world is facing future climate changes. Theses climate changes gives expression in increased average temperature, stronger gusts, more extreme rainfall and rising sea levels. What happens to low-lying communities as the sea level rises? On this question at issue, SWECO Environment worked with an action plan for the vicinity of Falsterbonäset. Falsterbo, Höllviken and Skanör are low-lying communities and a concern from the municipality of Vellinge is that the properties will be flooded as a result of the climate changes. Some areas are densely built and already used land must be used because space to build a levee is missing. A proposal is submitted from SWECO Environment that the road structure shall also function as water barrier at these locations. How should a road be designed to function as a water barrier without a negative impact on traffic? Two structures are suggested in this report, one robust construction of stone to cope with ocean waves and erosion and one construction of sand because its only purpose is to protect adjacent properties from flooding. A lighter structure is advantageous when the impact on existing land will be lower. It is also possible to cover such constructions with grass that causes it to better blend into the scenery. The robust construction has the advantage that it is more durable and can withstand the forces of nature better. However, it will give a greater impact on the ground. (Less)
