This thesis aims to analyze how the social media impacts the fashion system. Today's fashion system is not only complex but also in a state of radical change, and therefore difficult to analyze with a single question. Therefore the study is divided in to three categories: communication, production and image. Based on these categories the study aims to answer three questions, How has fashion communication come to be affected by Instagrams creation? How has the spreading of information on Instagram come to influence the fashion production? How has Instagram become image building in the fashion system? To answer these questions the study analyses fashion articles to get an understanding of the dialog on the market between participants in the fashion system. It also analyses two Instagram accounts. To collect the information the study uses netnography as a framework for the research and applies a qualitative method. The theories that are used to analyze the material are visual culture, digital society, sociology and fashion-ology. The study emphasizes the development of a digital fashion system. This system is both interacting and competing with the traditional system. These two systems compete for recognition and power within the fashion system. Both systems are responsible for producing and reproducing the idea of fashion. The analyze also shows that both fashion systems are based on five components that are essential in the creation of fashion: information, communication, consumption, production and image. Fashion is thus created in its entirety and the five categories are therefore each other’s compliments. (Less)
