Abstract
The aim of this master dissertation was to examine coercive care in the line of work, as it was perceived and experienced by enrolled psychiatric nurses. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five participants who had current experiences of performing coercive acts towards patients. Data was analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Results were presented over three major themes: ”Coercion - a complex phenomenon”, ”Dimensions of conflict in the experience of performing coercion” and ”See the human being”. A prominent finding was that the role of coercer was perceived as filled with conflict since the participants were aware that the patient experienced abuse. The approach to coercive measures was marked by... (More)

The approach to coercive measures was marked by ambivalence, and was seen partly as a failure and partly as a precaution. A strategy to deal with the difficult work of coercion was to strive to prevent dehumanization of the patient. Future studies should continue to examine the experience of coercion from a relational understanding; one that places the phenomenon in an inter-subjective field between staff and patient. Furthermore, the role of the coercer could be explored in relation to the dehumanizing processes in psychiatric organization and linked to the experience of self-determination at work. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
