Abstract
With a rapid growing number of refugees in the world, extended knowledge concerning the causes of refugee militarization, the situation where refugees become involved in militaristic activities, is of high importance. As previously seen, for example in Kenya, Burma and Syria, refugee militarization often contributes to the spreading and escalation of military conflicts and can add to its protractedness.
Existing academic explanations of the phenomenon have mainly focused on exogenous factors, thereby excluding possible endogenous accounts.
This paper examines a proposed comprehensive theory of refugee militarization published by Mike Lebson, that combines endogenous and exogenous explanatory factors. Through a qualitative case study, I... (More)

This paper examines a proposed comprehensive theory of refugee militarization published by Mike Lebson, that combines endogenous and exogenous explanatory factors. Through a qualitative case study, I test and apply the theory to the case of Palestinians in Jordan who militarized in the late 1960s, but not in the previous twenty years of refugeehood in their receiving state.
The results suggest the potential value of involving endogenous factors when explanations to the refugee militarization are sought, and as a consequence, how this means there are extended possibilities in the work of reducing the risk of the phenomenon. (Less)
