Abstract
The present study examined psychological mechanisms in order to increase knowledge regarding mental illness amongst 647 over-indebted individuals in Sweden. Differences were explored between individuals with probable clinical depression and/or anxiety and individuals without probable clinical depression and/or anxiety considering objective measurements of the debt, financial strain, coping, contact with the Swedish Enforcement Agency and financial advisors as well as demographic variables. Moreover, interactions within these variables were investigated. In order to collect the data HADS, Brief COPE as well as questions formulated by the research team were used as measurements. Prominent results showed that over-indebted individuals with... (More)

Moreover, interactions within these variables were investigated. In order to collect the data HADS, Brief COPE as well as questions formulated by the research team were used as measurements. Prominent results showed that over-indebted individuals with probable clinical depression and/or anxiety were younger, showed greater levels of financial strain, used adaptive coping strategies to a lesser extent and maladaptive coping strategies to a greater extent. Furthermore, the results indicate that the experience of the treatment when in contact with budget and debt advisors, as well as the outcome of a debt settlement application was of importance for depression, anxiety, financial strain and coping. Additionally, coping showed impact on levels of reported financial strain. These results put emphasis on the importance of adaptive coping, a positive treatment when seeking help as well as the psychological exposure of over-indebted individuals. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
