Abstract
This research shows that multiple factors are important when a person is trying to quit an alcohol or drug addiction. Factors that have shown to be important in the decision of breaking up with the addiction and to become alcohol or drug-free are both internal and external.
The purpose of the research was to identify which factors that were most valuable to the interviewed persons in terms of quitting the addiction and which factors contributed during the time of becoming drug-free. We also wanted to see what their life looked like after becoming free from the addiction. The research is based on a qualitative method and a total of six interviews. The interviews were analyzed, interpreted and compared to previous research and theories.... (More)

The interviews were analyzed, interpreted and compared to previous research and theories. Our result shows that internal factors like the feeling of reaching a personal bottom, but also external factors like feeling support, love and respect from the surroundings, have been important to the break-up and the continuing of being drug-free. We also noticed the importance of breaking the contact with people who are alcohol or drug-addicted and instead socialize with people reflecting the new lifestyle and sharing the same life experience.
