- Abstract
- In my study within social anthropology I try to find the answer to why people chose to do a tattoo in their face. I start out with investigating the history of tattoos from traditional tribal tattoos, to sailor´s and criminal´s tradition of tattooing and finally to members of contemporary subcultures. Tattoos have become more and more common within the mainstream culture in Sweden today. Tattoos that can be covered under a shirt is more common, and visible tattoos on hands and neck are becoming seen more often. People with facial tattoos are seen less frequently and they trigger questions and stereotypes within the beholder.
