Abstract
The railway is an important part of the Swedish infrastructure. There has been an increase in the traffic load as well as the demand for a well-functioning railway system. The construction of the Swedish railway system started more than 150 years ago. The Swedish Transport Administration is responsible for distributing the financial resources allocated for fulfilling the objectives given by the government. Earlier, the government itself carried out the railway maintenance.
The aim of the report is to study and categorize faults arising along two separate regional railways, one with modern standard and one in need of renovation, and to compare these railways, including the number and type of faults occurring for each of the two cases. The... (More)

Earlier, the government itself carried out the railway maintenance.
The aim of the report is to study and categorize faults arising along two separate regional railways, one with modern standard and one in need of renovation, and to compare these railways, including the number and type of faults occurring for each of the two cases. The reference railway sections, Kinnekulle and Älvsborg. Both tracks have a regional function and feed the larger western mainline.
The work has been conducted partly by a literature study, including identification of databases containing documented faults and maintenance needs of the railroad system. Then, Bessy was used to find notes from inspections of the studied railways. Bessy is a computer based system used by the Swedish Transport Administration for implementation of safety, maintenance and taking takeover inspection for fixed railway installations.
The comparison between the Kinnekulle and Älvsborg railways demonstrates that a renovated and modernized track has significantly fewer remarks and that gradual modernization of the remaining low standard railroads are the most long-term sustainable option. The remarkably lower need for maintenance on a modernized track also gives incentive for gradual modernization. (Less)
