In the management of horses is heavy lifting and other strenuous movements regular. Something that has been overlooked in the horse sector is working in conjunction with the management of horses. There has hardly been any development work in the stables the last hundred years, which has taken place in agriculture where most things have been streamlined and led to most parts of the work has been mechanized. A rationalization of the work environment leads to more time that can be spent on such as the training of the horses and if the heaviest parts of the management of manual manure handling and feeding would be replaced with such mechanized alternatives, many injuries could be prevented and thus avoided. Many do not want to mechanize the work as they believe that this would lead to worse care of the horses, and they are afraid that it would not be worthwhile to invest in such a reconstruction or new machines.
The purpose of this work is to contribute to knowledge in order to improve working conditions as well as the protection of human health. I have therefore chosen to investigate two specific stables, to see how the work environment is in these stables, if anything could be streamlined or made more efficient, and if it would pay off financially. The stables examined belong Hästaks business and has a total space for 46 horses included in their breeding and racing operations. The various aspects that have been investigated in the stables where the overall design and their manure handling system, fodder and forage systems and even the placement of the gear. In the two specific investigated stables there had already been a mechanization of manure removal, which the employees and the owner was very pleased with. Using a spreadsheet used in a previous study (Wallertz, 2009) estimated that it still is possible to save about 92 000 SEK to the labor cost per year of concentrate and forage systems could be rationalized by using an electric trolley instead of the manually-drawn carriages and they would also lead to a better working environment for the employees, then they would not have to pull the cars with power and roughage manually. Other minor changes have tools for manure removal and feeding in several places in the same stall also leads to more efficient work and this is particularly true in the stable with longer stall aisles, which Hästaks both teams had.
