Abstract
This master thesis is about the regulation of temperature and flow of a steaming fluid when it passes through a heater. There are problems with the present regulation of temperature when the flow rate varies.

The study has dealt with two control methods to regulate temperature and flow of the infusion fluid. These methods are different from the method to date.

The first method is based on the fact that a change in flow affects the temperature twice as fast as a change in heating power. The idea is then to regulate temperature by PID-control of flow. The weight should be regulated by PI-control of heating power.

The other method uses state feedback control where the parameters in the feedback loop is depending on... (More)

The weight should be regulated by PI-control of heating power.

The other method uses state feedback control where the parameters in the feedback loop is depending on flow rate. A model of the heater is required and is made based on physical equations. The adequate states are estimated by means of an estimator. Design of regulator and estimator are done with linear quadratic optimization.

The performance characteristics proves that the new implemented control methods both give satisfactorily good results at ordinary conditions. Flow controlled regulation of temperature brings about a particularly good regulation of temperature when major changes on the reference weight for the infusion fluid occur. State feedback control without feed forward of flow does not give quite as good regulation of temperature.

The implementation has been done with a 8-bit microprocessor which has caused some computational problems.

Our judgement is that the flow controlled regulation of temperature should be recommended. This method is better than the present method under ordinary circumstances. (Less)
