Abstract
The purpose of this qualitative study, with a constructivist approach, was to examine how
professionals work with children as next of kin to chronically ill patients in somatic care.
Through a content analysis, using local guidelines and policy documents for the work with
children as next of kin, as well as semi-structured interviews focusing on how the
professionals themselves describe their work with the children, the result gave a clearer view
of how the work is carried out. The interviews were conducted with some of the social

workers at a counselor department, associated with a local hospital where this department is
the only ones working with this these issues in the area.
The study shows that there is some lack of support from the administrations in terms of
resources and educational opportunities which the social workers have the right to and are
requiring. There is also surprisingly little interaction between organizations and the counselor
department. What turned out to correlate well between the policy documents and the
counselor departments view of the work was how the information, advice and support of the
children and their families are carried out through the counselor department despite the lack
of education in the subject. (Less)
