- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to examine which discourses that appear in the construction of honour related violence in swedish policy documents. This study focus on the construction of honour related violence in terms of it’s forms of expression as well as it’s underlying causes. The study is based on text analysis, with four swedish policy documents as empirical material. Social constructivism was applied as a theoretical approach. As a complement, the empirical material was analyzed with the following analytical tools; binary oppositions, dichotomies, gender of power, heteronormativity, the others and the principle of keeping apart. Our findings were that two discourses appeared in each of the documents. We found that in the discourse “girls and boys affects differently”, gender was significant in the construction of honour related violence in terms of it’s forms of expression. According to the discourse, girls and boys affects differently as victims of honour related violence due to their unequal positions in the patriarchal society. In the discourse “we and the others”, ethnicity was significant in the construction of honour related violence in terms of it’s underlying causes. With this discourse the authors described honour related violence as a problem existing in groups of people with origin in other countries than Sweden, as a consequence these groups of people became the underlying cause of the problem’s existence in Sweden.
The main title “Hold apart” refers to the common factor of the two identified discourses in the construction of honour related violence, both of which aim to separating groups of people. (Less)
