Polylactic acid (PLA) is a versatile, commercial biopolymer used for its biodegradability, extraction from

By incorporating nanocellulose fibres (MFC) into the biopolymer, a strong and thermally stable
bionanocomposite can be synthesised with good potential of replacing unrenewable plastics such as Styrofoam,
a foam long desired to be replaced with ‘green’ materials. However, certain challenges need to be overcome in
order to achieve a uniform nanodispersion of MFC in PLA which additionally should be suitable for foaming. In
this project three dispersion routes were attempted for achieving a uniform nanodispersion: modification of MFC
with fatty amines; wet mixing of MFC suspended in an aqueous solution with dry PLA and with PLA latex
respectively. Batch foaming with supercritical CO2 was performed on PLA samples to evaluate the method
implementation at Innventia AB, Stockholm, were the project was carried out. The results have given new
insights into the dispersion mechanisms of modificated and un-modificated MFC in PLA for future work in the
area. (Less) - Abstract (Swedish)

fossil-baserade material.
Komposterbar
plast gjord på förnyelsebara källor
kan avsevärt komma att vända utvecklingen.
