Abstract
This study examines how Swedish media portrays female terrorists originating from North Caucasus. The empirical material consists of 18 articles from four Swedish newspapers, Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter, Expressen and Svenska Dagbladet. The material is scrutinized from a gender perspective to discover what role gender and gender roles have in the medial portrayal of female terrorists. Since previous research from other countries have shown that medial portrayals of female terrorists are categorized using certain themes, such as hyper terrorist, crazy and evil, this study uses a qualitative content analysis to examine whether similar themes can be found in the Swedish media discourse. Since previous research from other countries have shown that medial portrayals of female terrorists are categorized using certain themes, such as hyper terrorist, crazy and evil, this study uses a qualitative content analysis to examine whether similar themes can be found in the Swedish media discourse. Through the qualitative content analysis five main themes are identified (1) female terrorist is titled (black) widow, (2) female terrorist is described neutrally, (3) female terrorist with a political motive, (4) female terrorist with a religious motive and (5) female terrorist is forcible killed by a man. In the analysis the five themes along with subthemes are analyzed separated from each other, and they are analyzed in relation to earlier research and with the perspective of Laura Sjoberg’s gender theory. The results that emerge are that gender roles play a big part in the description of female terrorist, which is shown in the need to explain why female terrorists become terrorists. This is because the female gender role is not compatible with violence, and thus media feel the need to explain what have made the female terrorists turn to such a violent practice.
