Abstract
This thesis explores the view of business related and historical records in 22 small and medium-sized companies in Sweden. According to Swedish law, small and medium-sized companies must keep business related records for a certain period of time. The keeping of records of historical value are on the other hand an activity based on free choices and does not answer under any law. The records of small and medium-sized companies can be seen as a part of the Swedish cultural heritage but the companies alone control who gains access to their archives.

This study is based on a qualitative method as the data has been collected through surveys and interviews. The theories used for the analysis are new institutional theory and historical awareness.

The authors conclude that it is mainly the declared rules, such as the Swedish legislation, that dictates the archiving traditions in small and medium-sized companies. The documents that are preserved have been produced and used in connection with work-related activities. We found that what constitutes these companies perception of what an archive is suppose to be is a storage for business-related documents that according to swedish law or agreements with customers must be preserved. Other material, such as historical documents with a nostalgic value is not actively preserved, it can rather be seen as an aimless process which occur more randomly. History can be used by the companies to form legitimacy and to strengthen both internal and external relationships but no active attempts to preserve historical documents are being made. The study shows that the company history is preserved through oral traditions rather than materialised and put in archives. The companies do not consider their archives to be of any use or value to anyone outside the company. Their documents are filed only for the benefit of the business and are not preserved with any purpose to enable the outside world to take part of it. (Less)
