This essay discusses that preventive interventions are highly valued, since it is commanded from a political level, that the preventive interventions are supposed to be performed on multiple levels in the society. Research shows that preventive interventions mostly have a positive outcome, by being health promoting. Studies also show that leaders of preventive interventions are highly valued and important factors in the process. It was found that school counselors who work at schools, which do not have preventive interventions, more strongly suspect that their pupils consume too much alcohol and narcotics, compared to the opinion of school counselors who work at schools which employ preventive interventions. It was also found, that the school counselors find it difficult to see what effect, if any, the preventive interventions contribute. But they hope the effects will help the students develop risk awareness, and acquire tools which will help them handle situations connected to alcohol and drugs. In this study the school counselors opinioned that their own professions, school nurses and teachers, are the most suitable to moderate the interventions. These professions, alcohol and drugs are discussed as symbols from a symbolic point of view. It is found that these symbols are associated with meanings from the normative perspective in the society, and that the symbols paired together leads to an important function. (Less)
