Abstract
This study investigates if, and to what extent, a membership in the EU affects a country’s economic growth. The aim is to find out if an EU-membership leads to a permanent effect on economic growth, a temporary effect the first ten years after entering the EU, and if the fact that the growing number of members in the EU has any effect on economic growth. Panel data is used to estimate nine regressions with eight independent variables. Three of those variables examine the impact EU can have on growth. The result shows that there is a positive permanent effect, but also a negative temporary effect the first ten years after entering the EU. Furthermore, the effect of a larger number of member states has a negative impact. This result is... (More)

This result is analyzed from a macroeconomic perspective, using models based on neoclassical- and new growth theories. (Less)
