Abstract
A Shattered Profession - A survey of the variation wihtin the profession of social work

The aim of this study was to describe the recruitment requirements that employers place on typical positions for social workers as well as to understand the meaning of the social work profession in the semi-profession. The aim of this study was to describe the recruitment requirements that employers place on typical positions for social workers as well as to understand the meaning of the social work profession in the semi-profession. Previous research on work advertisements have focused on how different sets of skills have been linked to different kinds of professions, and how the demand of skills have varied over time. In this study, we have used a mix of quantitative and qualitative methods. To examine employers’ requirements for recruitment, we perused the demand of skills in work advertisements of five typical Swedish social work professions. We quantitatively compiled our results in a frequency table and three bars, which then were qualitatively analyzed using profession theories. We found a difference amongst the examined professions in their ability of using closure strategies to achieve ”social closure” and exclude other professions from entering the jurisdiction of typical Swedish social work professions (Abbott 1988, Parkin 1982). One way of doing so is through the demand of a bachelor of science degree in social work. The recruitment requirements were shattered and varied in type, which gives the social work professions an unclear structure. This makes the jurisdiction of the social work professions indistinct, which affects the status and legitimacy of the profession. We found the examined typical social work professions more or less professional based on definitons of non-profession, semiprofession and classic profession. (Less)
