- Abstract
- This study aims to describe the different types of impactites that are present on Earth and to characterize previously undescribed samples of impactites from Mien, an impact structure located in southern Sweden. Impactites are rocks that are generated from one or several meteoric impacts and they are divided into three groups; shocked rocks, impact breccias and impact melts. The impactites that are described in this study are named MIE15_03M, MIE15_02J and MIE15_02F. MIE15_03M and MIE15_02F share macroscopic features, since both of them have a dark, aphantic matrix with inclusions of mineral and rock fragments. They both most certainly represent impact melt rocks. While both samples have vesicles, MIE15_02F has a greater amount of them and... (More)

They both most certainly represent impact melt rocks. While both samples have vesicles, MIE15_02F has a greater amount of them and their size range up to a couple of centimeters. In some of these there is filling within the vesicles which sometimes is partly or completely weathered. Sample MIE15_03M unlike MIE15_02F, displays flow-banding. This flow-banding suggests that MIE15_03M and MIE15_02F were generated under different circumstances. The last sample, MIE15_02J differs from the other two due to it having a fine-grained matrix which is not aphantic. MIE15_02J also displays flow-bandning which is defined by schlieren of melted quartz and plagioklase. This sample contain both mineral and rock fragments. MIE15_02J is most certainly a suevite due to the glass found in the sample, formed from the melted quartz and plagioklase portrayed as schlieren. In order to clarify what kind of impactite these samples represent and how to classify them further research must be done. The samples, especially the impact melt rock ones, should for example be examined under the petrographic microscope to determine the nature of the matrices. MIE15_02J ought to be compared to other similar samples from Mien to be able to rule out whether the sample is a suevite or a local anomaly. (Less)
- Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
