- To keep a high standard of the golf courses intensive maintenance work might be required. To avoid weeds, fungi and diseases on the courses almost half of all golf clubs in Sweden use chemical pesticides. Because of the toxic nature of the the substances it may cause negative impacts on the environment which makes it important to reduce or stop entirely with the use of chemical pesticides.
This study is conducted to find out what the golf clubs in Kristianstad can do to reduce their use of pesticides, and provide guidance to the supervisory authority in the management of golf clubs.

The main use of chemical pesticides on the golf clubs in Kristianstad municipality is to prevent fungal damage on the putting green and weeds on the fairway. Most of the golf clubs here use prevention methods to strengthen the grass so the use of chemical pesticides can be reduced. For a golf club to be able to improve their maintenance work it requires that the environmental manager have control over the golf club activities and knows what they can improve. To reach the international standard through an environmental certification can be a good way to incentivice golf clubs to improve their environmental work. The supervisory authority can also impose stricter requirements on the golf clubs before authorizing the use of chemical pesticides. They can also provide information at the environmental inspection on the golf club.
But by increasing the mechanical control and maintenance work the chemical control can be reduced on the golf courses. This work requires long-term planning but a golf club can manage without the use of chemical pesticides and still maintain a high standard of courses for the players. Det är viktigt att minska denna användning eftersom kemiska bekämpningsmedel innehåller giftiga ämnen som kan orsaka negativ miljöpåverkan om de läcker ut till grundvattnet i marken.
Denna studie genomfördes i samarbete med Kristianstads kommun för att ge praktiska exempel hur golfklubbarna och tillsynsmyndigheten i kommunen kan arbeta för att minska användningen av kemiska bekämpningsmedel. Studien har genomförts med hjälp av intervjuer med miljöansvariga på Kristianstads kommuns golfklubbar och fyra andra golfklubbar i övriga Sverige samt två bankonsulter på Svenska Golfförbundet.
Användningen av kemiska bekämpningsmedel på golfklubbarna i Kristianstads kommun sker främst mot svampangrepp på vid hålen. En del använder även kemiska bekämpningsmedel mot ogräs på spelytan och det högre gräset vid sidan om. Dock sker den mesta besprutningen först vid synligt angrepp eller vid tendens till angrepp vilket gör användningen relativt liten. För att golfklubbarna ska förbättra sitt skötselarbete ytterligare kan det bli aktuellt att bli miljöcertifierade enligt den internationella standarden ”GEO”. Det kan dock vara bra att ha koll över sin verksamhet innan man siktar in sig på miljöcertifieringar. Även kommunens tillsynsmyndighet kan i vissa fall ställa hårdare krav på verksamheten innan de får tillstånd för spridning av kemiska bekämpningsmedel och vid miljötillsynen. Till exempel kan de begära in historisk dokumentation som visar vad verksamheten har gjort under året samt ställa krav på verksamheterna att beskriva vilka förebyggande metoder man använder sig av i skötselarbetet. De kan till exempel kräva att golfklubbarna använder sig av: stödså spelytorna, ta bort fukt och förbättra dränering för att stärka gräsets motståndskraft mot sjukdomar och angrepp.
Men genom att öka skötselarbetet och den mekaniska bekämpningen på golfbanorna kan användningen av kemiska bekämpningsmedel minskas i framtiden. Arbetet kräver långsiktig planering men man kan klara sig helt utan kemiska bekämpningsmedel och fortfarande hålla god standard på banorna för spelarna. (Less)
