- Abstract
- The aim of the study was to examine how professionals in the Child and Youth Psychiatry work and relate to the diagnosis of ADD. ADD is included in the diagnosis of ADHD according to the diagnostic manual DSM 5 and is described as ADHD predominantly inattentive form. Research shows that ADD is less observed in relation to ADHD. The research questions in the study are: How do the professionals understand the diagnosis ADD? What do the professionals think of the diagnosis ADD and are there any specific interventions related to the diagnosis? Do they see any connections to the diagnosis in relation to gender? - The aim of the study was to examine how professionals in the Child and Youth Psychiatry work and relate to the diagnosis of ADD. We analysed our data using the theories of social constructivism and gender. The study results showed that ADD is difficult to identify because of its symptoms, which can result in misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment. According to the professionals ADD needs to be developed with more specific interventions which are connected to non-hyperactive behaviour. Boys are overrepresented in the ADHD diagnosis but professionals have seen a change during recent years. Professionals are more aware that the symptoms are different according to gender, but girls are still underrepresented in the diagnosis of ADHD. Because of the difference in symptoms the professionals believe that girls should be compared with girls and boys with boys. Finally, our study shows that ADD specific symptoms need further attention and the gender differences need to be better observed. (Less)
