Punktlighetsvariationer på järnvägen – Studie av punktlighetsdippar på Kust till kust-banan
(2016)LTH School of Engineering in Helsingborg
- Abstract
- One problem with the Swedish railways is the low reliability and punctuality. A distinction can be made between major and minor disorders, where minor disorders have a greater impact on overall punctuality because of its large numbers. One way to describe the large disorders are with punctuality dips and punctuality depressions, which are short-term and long-term variations in punctuality. This study focuses on the punctuality dips. This study covers the Swedish single track railway between Almedal and Kalmar and its connection to Gothenburg at the western coastal railway line. The time period of the study is 2013 – 2015. The traffic on the railway line consists of regional train services belonging to Krösatågen, SJ, Västtrafik and... (More)

This study focuses on the punctuality dips. This study covers the Swedish single track railway between Almedal and Kalmar and its connection to Gothenburg at the western coastal railway line. The time period of the study is 2013 – 2015. The traffic on the railway line consists of regional train services belonging to Krösatågen, SJ, Västtrafik and Öresundståg and several freight services from different operators, including Green Cargo which is the dominant operator. Data about punctuality per month for the studied railway line were collected from the Swedish Transport Administration's monitoring database Lupp and was then plotted on a graph where two punctuality dips and two punctuality depressions were identified. The impacts of punctuality dips on various train services were investigated and later on, more detailed views on monthly and weekly level were plotted, in order to pinpoint on which specific days the punctuality dips were occurring. Data with traffic-impacting events on the designated days were collected from Lupp and compared to graphs showing the time-based and geography-based variations of punctuality. The results were later analysed, discussed and conclusions were made. Two large punctuality dips were identified, the first one on the 13th of May 2013 which was due to a combination of maintenance works and several technical errors, and a one on the 30th of January 2014 which was due to winter-related problems and several technical errors. The punctuality dips had relatively little effect on punctuality at large, and it was clear that there were no particular geographic concentration of punctuality dips, but instead a combination of different places. To limit further punctuality dips it is needed that the maintenance of the railway gets more effective and the amount of preventive actions is increased in order to reduce the need of emergency repairs.
